Quick Review: Key BLS Concepts
1. High-Quality CPR
- Compression Rate: 100-120 per minute.
- Compression Depth:
- Adults: At least 2 inches (5 cm)
- Children: At least 1/3 the chest diameter (~2 inches or 5 cm)
- Infants: At least 1/3 the chest diameter (~1.5 inches or 4 cm)
- Full chest recoil is essential—do not lean on the chest.
- Minimize interruptions—limit pauses to under 10 seconds.
2. Airway & Breathing
- Use head tilt-chin lift (unless spinal injury suspected, then use jaw thrust).
- Deliver rescue breaths as follows:
- Adults: 1 breath every 5-6 seconds (10-12 breaths/min).
- Children & Infants: 1 breath every 3-5 seconds (12-20 breaths/min).
- Use a bag-mask device whenever available.
3. Two-Rescuer & Team-Based CPR
- Adult CPR: 30:2 ratio (same for single and two rescuers).
- Pediatric CPR: 15:2 ratio with two rescuers.
- Switch roles every 2 minutes to prevent fatigue.
- Use closed-loop communication when working in teams.
4. AED Use
- Apply pads as soon as possible.
- Follow AED prompts; deliver a shock if advised.
- If no shock is advised, resume CPR immediately.
- Special considerations: Pacemakers, wet skin, medication patches.
5. Special Populations
- Pregnant patients: Perform manual left uterine displacement to improve blood flow.
- Trauma patients: Prioritize spinal precautions & hemorrhage control.
- Opioid overdose: Provide rescue breathing first, then administer naloxone.
