NEUROPROTECTIVE STRATEGIES POST-RESUSCITATION

Pediatric survivors of cardiac arrest are at high risk for neurological injury. Neuroprotective strategies aim to minimize secondary brain injury and optimize recovery.

Key Neuroprotective Strategies:

  • Targeted Temperature Management (TTM): Maintain a temperature of 36-37.5°C to prevent hyperthermia and reduce cerebral metabolism.
  • Controlled Ventilation: Avoid hypoxia or hyperoxia, maintaining oxygen saturation between 94-98%. Target normocapnia with a PaCO2 of 35-45 mmHg.
  • Blood Pressure Optimization: Ensure adequate cerebral perfusion by maintaining age-appropriate blood pressure levels.
  • Glucose Control: Monitor and treat hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia to prevent exacerbation of brain injury.
  • Seizure Monitoring and Management: Use continuous EEG monitoring for high-risk patients and treat seizures promptly with anticonvulsants.

Early implementation of neuroprotective measures can significantly improve neurological outcomes in pediatric patients post-resuscitation.
