TACHYCARDIA ALGORITHM

Tachycardia in pediatric patients can indicate various conditions, ranging from fever to severe cardiac pathology. Differentiating between stable and unstable tachycardia is key to guiding appropriate management.

Types of Tachycardia:

  • Sinus Tachycardia: A normal response to fever, pain, or dehydration.
  • Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT): A rapid, regular rhythm originating above the ventricles.
  • Ventricular Tachycardia (VT): A life-threatening rhythm requiring immediate intervention.

Management Algorithm:

  • Stable Tachycardia:
    • Attempt vagal maneuvers (e.g., ice to the face, blowing into a syringe).
    • If ineffective, administer adenosine (0.1 mg/kg IV/IO).
  • Unstable Tachycardia:
    • Perform synchronized cardioversion (0.5-1 J/kg, increasing to 2 J/kg if needed).

Timely and accurate identification of tachycardia type ensures effective treatment and improved outcomes.
